Getting to know Gareth Noble from MAFS

Hey Gareth, to start things off, could you tell us a little about yourself?

Hi, I’m Gareth Noble, I’m a 26 year old apprentice Barber and currently live in Cromwell, NZ. I was born in South Africa and moved to New Zealand when I was 10, where I have pretty much have spent most of my time in Cromwell with a few stints around the country.

What got you interested in becoming a barber?

I chose to become a Barber because it was a way for me to be creative. I have always been fascinated by art and being creative. I think if I could draw I would have become a tattoo artist instead but I absolutely love being a barber and can honestly say I enjoy every day at work. That to me is a very big thing when you’re spending so much time in your job.

When did you get your first tattoo and what inspired you?

I got my first tattoo when I was 18 and was never really going to stop from that day forward. I always had a massive interest in tattooing from a very young age and my first tattoo was my Scottish clan in Hebrew which is a mix of the two sides of my family.

Which is your most impulsive tattoo?

My most impulsive tattoo is a very odd story, I was in Hollywood about 4 years ago drinking at a bar and went outside where I was approached by a stranger who ended up being a male stripper. He asked if I was keen to get a tattoo, for me it doesn’t take much convincing so I said yes. The only catch was he would pay for it if he got to choose it. He ended up thinking I was Australian and picked a boomerang for me which ended up on my lower stomach. Two years later I went back to the same shop and at 4am added “Hollywood” in red ink next to it.

Who is your go to tattoo artist and why do you respect him or her?

My got to artist is Cameron Mattson or Camo who works at Otautahi in Queenstown. I really like Camo’s style of art and like to give him a lot of freedom. I’ve been getting tattooed by Camo for about 4-5 years now and he’s done most of my work but this year I decided to give him complete free reign on my back to a complete custom piece of his choosing.

How do you look after your tattoos?

I used to use normal moisturiser but came across Electric Ink Skincare back in July at Barbercraft. I have been using the range daily since and have really noticed a difference. The colours are more intensified and it goes a long way.

What has been some of your highlights this year?

My biggest highlight this year would have to be being one of 12 people who decided to marry a stranger on TV. It was a crazy and emotional journey but something I will always remember and never regret. On our honeymoon in Bali, my new wife decided to get me tattooed which was probably the greatest date. Unfortunately, the marriage didn’t work out and I’m back to being single but who knows what’s to come.

Any exciting plans for the new year?

I am currently I’m in the process of moving up to Auckland to start the next chapter of my life, a new city and I’m sure a lot of new adventures. I am looking forward to a faster pace of life for a while and to see what the future holds.

Thanks Gareth, we look forward to seeing what you get up to!
